Fusion is defined as the “process of joining two or more things together to form a single entity.” Fusion also describes what we are doing in Ad+PR at Western Kentucky University. While Advertising and Public Relations are separate majors, they share some common DNA. Our majors take several core classes together and they incorporate similar tools in developing campaigns. Both majors also benefit from being in the School of Journalism & Broadcasting.
The Ad+PR programs at Western Kentucky University are a special place at a special University. With over 300 majors, both the Advertising and Public Relations programs are attracting smart and creative students who want to excel beyond the norm. We offer a challenging, yet supportive environment. Our slogan is “Think Out Loud.” We encourage our majors to look at problems in fresh and novel ways. New ideas are needed as the Advertising and Public Relations fields are changing rapidly with more consumers and businesses utilizing digital technologies. The video above is a great example of this new media environment. Michael Wesch describes Web 2.0 in just under 5 minutes! Amazing. You can learn even more about digital technologies and social media by reading adthinktank.com.
Our majors have the best tools to help them innovate. We are housed in a new $18 million state-of-the-art building with easily accessible technology. We embrace new media. Real world and hands-on. I mean really hands on! We also have a professionally-managed Ad+PR agency called ImageWest. Our majors can cop class credit for doing real projects for real clients. We also participate in student competitions and stage real events to apply classroom material. The slideshow above features pics from Gameathon, our regional video game expo and competition. It’s totally produced by students and faculty.
Want experience and a degree? This is the place. The Advertising major has three concentrations or specialties. Ad Majors can now emphasize Planning (includes social media), Print Design, or Interactive Ad Design. The PR major is grounded in business strategy and is taught by certified PR professionals. Look over the site. If you have any questions, please e-mail me directly at cliff.shaluta@wku.edu.
Best,
